JAYNE SHATZ: LARGE-scale vessel making

Potters have been producing large-scale vessels since antiquity, employing various techniques. The ancient Japanese threw a pot, and then built a fire inside with twigs and branches, firming the pot to add coils. The potter then threw a series of coils onto the existing form, and created another fire to firm up the new section. They repeated the process many times to achieve the desired height.

In this video, Jayne Shatz demonstrates her take on the ancient method with a contemporary twist: use of a blowtorch. With this technique, you can throw a very large pot in one sitting. This process gives you a marvelous sense of spontaneity, enabling you to throw a piece a little bit larger than you are used to ... or to create a piece several feet high!
